We're here to help. We cast voices every day so we know what the industry is looking for. We are up on all of the trends in both voice types and reads. A KH demo will have you sounding like a seasoned pro. That is what is truly important because the pros are the people you will be measured against. KH brings a vast knowledge of the voice world and years of directing skills to the process. That is what sets us apart.
Craig will ask you questions by email regarding your acting background, voice experience, mic experience, what reads you feel are your best, and anything special that you may bring to the table. For example, you may do a mean Scottish accent or have an infectious laugh. This may be incorporated in your demo. Typically, we will go with you doing different reads as opposed to you doing different voices. What that means is, you reading different moods and volumes. If the client needs a Scottish voice, they will cast a Scottish actor in the role. But, if you are comedic, we may bend the rules. Sometimes things just happen in the studio in a very organic sort of way! We may also ask you to phone in and leave us a message so that we can hear the age range and tone of your normal speaking voice as well.
You then come in to our professional recording studio where voice auditions take place and finished commercials are recorded. We will provide you with 6 - 8 commercials that we have chosen or written specifically for you. WE DON'T EVER USE THE SAME SCRIPT TWICE! We also don't use material that has ever been used for an audition or a finished on-air commercial in Canada. We don't want to misrepresent the product because advertising writers frown upon this. Writers want to hear the actor that was booked for the original role - not someone else. The writers are some of the people that will be booking you! That's why we cull together copy that will best suit your voice and your reads. You will then have 15 minutes to sit and read the scripts beforehand. Although this may seem like a short time, this is done so that nothing is over rehearsed. That is the way that both auditions and final commercials are recorded within the industry. If a performer sits with a script too long, they have preconceived notions of the read when they walk into the studio. It's hard to get that read out of your head once it's in there. This is how we get a fresh, unpolished read from the performer. The rest is in the directing. We know the business. Trust us.
After both you and Kim and/or Craig are satisfied that you've done the best reads possible, you leave the studio and we begin the editing process. We choose the order of your spots, and choose music for these spots. We pick specific pieces that complement your work. This is a long process and usually takes a week or two, depending upon our schedule. We then edit down the commercials until we come up with your 1 - 1 ½ minute demo reel. We'll give you a call when it's ready and you'll receive an mp3 so that you can send it to whomever you want via the internet! You then have one week to make any changes you'd like regarding the order, at an added cost, though we may advise against it.
Give us a call if you need more information or want to schedule a recording session! We suggest making an afternoon booking so that you are in full voice. We also suggest NOT drinking alcohol or eating spicy food the night before the recording session because it changes the tone of your voice.
The cost of the entire process is $700 + HST.
